On Tuesday 14th June, 16 boys from Years 5-8 were selected to compete in the West Surrey Athletics meeting held at the Guildford Spectrum Athletics Stadium.

The boys competed in a variety of track and field events against 45 other schools in this regional competition. All boys involved put in a fantastic effort and demonstrated their talents in their respective events. On what was a beautiful summer’s day, the boys showed great determination to continue to battle against some particularly warm weather and fierce competition.

The competition provided boys with an opportunity to represent West Surrey in the national competition in Nuneaton at the beginning of July.

There were some remarkable individual performances with boys pushing themselves to their limits and showing incredible determination. Adam C finished in 2nd place for the 800m in a personal best time of 2 minutes 21 seconds and qualifies for the nationals in this event. He also performed superbly in the high jump, finishing in 3rd place overall and jumping 1 m 40 cm. Cyrus S won his 1500m in an incredible race, finishing the longest track event available in 5 minutes 17 seconds, and qualifying for Surrey in the nationals. Another standout performance from Daniel C saw him finish in 3rd place in his 800m, narrowly missing out on a place to compete in Nuneaton in this event. However, his excellent long jump performance ensured he also made the nationals to compete in the U12 event.

Matthew T in Year 5 won his 800m race in a terrific 2 min 38sec as well as finishing first in the rounder’s ball throw, with a distance of 41m. As a Year 5 he won’t have the opportunity to showcase his talents at the Nationals, but we look forward to seeing how he gets on next year.

All the boys represented Rokeby superbly and supported each other throughout the day. They gained a valuable experience from the day and should be incredibly proud of their efforts and achievements at the competition.

Well done to all the boys involved!
