Christmas Hampers for Age Concern

Christmas Hampers
One of the highlights of Rokeby fundraising and community events is the visit of six year eight boys and twenty six Year four choir boys to sing and give out hampers at our local Head Office and Day Centre for Age Concern at Nelson Road New Malden. The smiles of the Age Concern members when our boys (led by Mr Wyatt and Mrs Stephens,) sung Christmas carols having carried in beautiful Harvest produce and sparkly Christmas hampers is lovely to behold. After the carols this year the members surprised us by singing ‘We Wish you A Merry Christmas’ which we all enjoyed along with the orange squash and a chance to chat and kind words from our hosts.

Before this visit six the House Captains, Oscar Guy (B), Gregor Hooke (G), William White (M) and Edward Elliott (O) and our ‘Heads’ Will Yun Farmborough and Albert Dwan were chosen to take some of the produce to KCAH (Kingston Churches Actin on Homelessness). After they’d dropped off our Christmas food donations the Operational Director Matt Hatton gave our boys an opportunity to learn more about the problem of homelessness and the experiences of rough sleepers in this wealthy area. We were saddened to hear how people who are homeless can struggle to get accepted back into the everyday world and of their very basic needs, which our small gifts would give some help towards around the difficult Christmas period. We observed a poignant lone smart shirt hanging neatly in a doorway over bedding outside the KCAH where one person was currently rough sleeping. Matt told us how as well as food donations that KCAH were also always in need of warm clean bedding and toiletries for distribution.
